Bar@494

We stopped by Bar@494 for a quiet drink one evening while staying nearby. It’s a nice looking bar inside the Grand Hyatt, comfortable and calm, with a relaxed hotel-lounge feel rather than a buzzing nightlife atmosphere. The drinks were good but not particularly memorable. I had a cocktail and my partner chose a glass of wine — both were perfectly fine, just nothing that made us want to order a second round out of excitement. Prices are what you’d expect from a five-star hotel bar: not outrageous, but definitely more than you’d pay outside. Service was polite but a little slow. The staff were friendly enough, though we had to wait longer than expected to place our order even though the bar wasn’t busy. Overall it’s a decent place if you’re already in the area and want somewhere quiet and comfortable for a drink, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit. It does the job, nothing more, nothing less.

Decided to try since I'm staying in the hotel. Its in the basement of the Grand Hyatt, so location is convenient. I came here for an early dinner because I had some things to do later and needed to get to bed early. I was seated in the most uncomfortable chair I've ever seen at a restaurant. The positioning is such that you can't even reach your plate without significant effort. You're sort of forced into this leaned back high top position, which sucks. I hated it. The esthetics of the place are nice. Wouldn't expect less from a restaurant at Grand Hyatt. And they do have a nice happy hour selection. HOWEVER... only know about the menu at all because 10 minutes after I was seated, no one even bothered to bring me a menu. So I got up and grabbed someone to get a menu. They weren't even busy at the time. At least not with customers. Service here is not what I would expect at a Bangkok street Vendor. Nevermind the Grand Hyatt. The food was good. Looked nice too. I'm only regret this place because of the terrible seating and service. Bangkok has some of the best service on the planet - here, I felt like I was in a bad part of France. Advice to management - your staff (especially the grumpy dude starting the 5:30 shift) needs some training. It could be a nice place. Staff needs to reflect what was spent on it.
