A Michelin-recognized restaurant near Tha Tien with dishes that match its reputation. The fried chicken draws consistent praise for its crunch, depth of flavor, and juicy interior. The raw shrimp marinated in pesto is another reason to make the trip.

After enjoying the view, you deserve a good meal. This place is even a Michelin-rated restaurant. We ordered a few dishes, all of which were excellent. Especially the raw shrimp marinated in pesto—super flavorful.

Finding Somtum Der in the quiet alleys of Tha Tien felt like discovering a stylish secret tucked away from the chaotic tourist energy of the Grand Palace. The restaurant manages to strike that rare balance between a polished, modern aesthetic and the raw, unpretentious soul of Northeastern (Isan) cooking. Walking in, you’re greeted by warm red tones and a buzz of energy that makes you feel like you’ve found the "cool" spot in the neighborhood. The food itself is an emotional rollercoaster for the palate. I started with their signature Tum Thai, and it was an immediate wake-up call—the crunch of the green papaya against the sharp, citrusy lime and the slow burn of Thai chilies felt incredibly authentic. It didn’t feel "watered down" for travelers; it tasted like a home-cooked meal from the countryside, served on a beautiful plate. The Moo Ping Kati Sod (grilled pork skewers marinated in coconut milk) was the standout for me. The meat was so tender it practically melted, and that hint of coconut sweetness offered a much-needed hug after the fire of the papaya salad. What kept me from giving it a perfect 5/5 was the reality of the space and the price. The dining area is quite intimate (some might say "cramped"), and during peak hours, it can feel a bit rushed. You’re also paying a "Michelin-recommended" premium; while the quality is undeniable, you can certainly find similar flavors on a street corner for a fraction of the price. However, the hygiene, the attentive service, and the comfort of an air-conditioned retreat make that extra cost feel like a fair trade-off. Ultimately, Somtum Der is a place of beautiful contrasts. It’s where you go when you want the bold, spicy heart of Isan food without sacrificing the comfort of a curated dining experience. Leaving the restaurant and walking back out toward the river, I felt satisfied and genuinely impressed. It’s a 4/5 experience that I’d recommend to anyone who wants a "safe" entry point into the wild, spicy world of authentic Thai flavors.

Absolutely delivers. The fried chicken is extraordinary, insanely tasty, deeply flavourful, perfectly crunchy on the outside while staying soft and juicy inside. Easily the star of the meal and worth coming back for alone. Everything feels confident and well-executed, with bold flavors that really stand out. No unnecessary fuss, just great food done right. A must-visit if you’re in Bangkok!
